What does "Areté"
We are frequently asked, "Where did
you get the name Areté?" The word areté
comes from ancient Greek. The most important value in Greek
culture was areté. Usually translated as "virtue"
or "excellence," the word means something closer
to "being the best you can be."
We do not mean to imply that our company has areté,
only that we aspire to have it.
Interestingly, the word areté is
not gender specific. The great ancient poet Homer applies
it to the Greek and Trojan heroes as well as major female
figures, such as Penelope, the wife of the Greek hero, Odysseus.
Areté is frequently associated with bravery, but more
often, with effectiveness. The man or woman of areté
is a person of the highest effectiveness who uses all of their
faculties: strength, bravery, and wit, to achieve real results.
An old Greek saying still repeated in modern Greece is "excellence
(areté) equals wisdom plus courage." Not only
must you understand the right thing to do, but you must have
the courage to do it.
Many of the works of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were
expositions on areté. What is it? How is it come by?
Can it be taught? How is it manifested in art, politics, ethics,
sports, and life in general? These are central questions in
Greek philosophy. Ancient Athens was an areté-focused
community. The fact that ancient Athens was the birthplace
of philosophy, theatre, science, and democracy is due in large
part to the focus on areté.
